Get to know the most important attractions of the picturesque city of Gyula!

Lying in the south-eastern tip of the country, on the banks of the Körös, Gyula and its surroundings offer many things to discover for visitors. In and around the city located next to the Romanian border will find what they are looking for both those who want to conquer the city, those who always keep their hiking boots ready in the trunk, and also those who love gastronomy.

Castle of Gyula

The most well-known attraction is the castle built in the XIV. century, which was not only one of the most important border castles of the Kingdom of Hungary, but also one of the oldest brick castles built on flat land in Europe. The Sigismund-era building offers a huge castle museum, and at its foot you will find a beautiful boating lake. In the summer, the castle turns into a real community space and hosts performances and concerts.

Centennial pastry shop

The name is deceptive, as the master confectioner András Salis founded his workshop and patisserie in 1840 in the building of a former pharmacy. Special sweets act as real medicine for the soul: you can taste handmade Cadeau bonbons, chocolates, cakes and other desserts in a fascinating environment. The furniture and interior evoke the atmosphere of a lively café at the turn of the century, and in no time we feel as if we have fallen into a movie.

Castle Bath and Aquapalace

At an arm's length away from the Gyula Castle you can find the Castle Bath, where you can relax in cold and thermal water pools, and the brave ones can choose from a variety of slides in the Aquapalace.

Visitors Centre at Almássy Mansion

If you want more than a classic museum, then the Almássy Mansion is definitely your choice. Did you know that Ferenc Erkel's grandfather lived as a butler in the mansion? The composer visited the mansion several times, but also the painter Mihály Munkácsy spread his wings here with the support of the painter Elek Szamossy. Through the permanent, interactive exhibition, we can get to know the everyday life of the aristocracy, but there is also a lookout point and escape rooms.

Mályvád Forest

This area is the second largest forest of the Great Plain, one of the country's most untouched wild landscapes and one of the protected areas of our country. Many species of animals and plants are present here, and among oaks and wild pear trees, we can find one of the world's most important populations of fallow deer. If we put on our hiking boots and set off, we can admire the wonderful environment that unfolds before our eyes.

Wenckheim Mansion

The castle completely renovated in 2022 is located in Szabadkígyós, only a short quarter of an hour's drive from Gyula. The castle can be interesting for both young and old, the paintings in the building can be re-colored on a digital drawing board, and the volumes of the story-telling bookcase can be selected on the touch screen. The goal is to get to know everyday life in an interactive way.

Erkel Ferenc Memorial House

The Erkel family lived in the teacher's apartment built in 1795 between 1808 and 1841 and here Erkel Ferenc was born. Within the framework of the permanent exhibition, we can visit all the rooms of the composer's birthplace, get to know his life story and family, and the everyday life of the house.
